Niall Benvie – Barnacle geese, Islay

Andrew Raynor

A large percentage of the Greenland barnacle goose population winters on the Hebridean island of Islay where fertile pastures for feeding and safe sea lochs for roosting provide an irresistible lure. But almost 50 000 geese creates a lot of pressure on grasslands that were actually intended for livestock and it has only been through intensive cooperation between farmers and conservationists (and some financial compensation) that the population of this Amber status bird has been allowed to grow.
